The Afreeca Freecs announced at a recent press conference the signing of former SK Telecom T1 top laner and world champion Jang "MaRin" Gyeong-Hwan.
MaRin’s return to LoL Champions Korea comes after the expiration of his contract with LoL Pro League’s LGD Gaming last December 3. He played for LGD Spring and Summer 2016, but failed to make any impact for the Chinese squad.
The aggressive top laner started his career with SK Telecom T1 S, but despite being dubbed as “the Faker of top lane”, Marin and his team always lived in the shadow of a more successful SK Telecom T1 K. His breakthrough came when SK Telecom were forced to merge their sister teams, K and S. SKT Telecom T1 was formed with Marin and SKT T1 S bot lane, Bae "Bang" Jun-sik and Lee "Wolf" Jae-wan, along with Bae "bengi" Seong-woong and Lee “ Faker” Sang-hyeok.
MaRin and SKT T1 went on to win back-to-back LCK titles (Spring and Summer 2016), and the coveted 2016 World Championship title, where Marin was the MVP of the tournament. During this run, he was considered, arguably, the best top laner in the world.
LCK 2017 Spring is looking to be one of, if not the most, competitive split for South Korea with the return of many Korean star players like Hyukkyu "Deft" Kim, Sehyung "Mata" Cho, and Wonseok "PawN" Heo.
